1992년 북미 및 전 세계 박스오피스 1위, 역대 북미 판타지 애니메이션 장르 흥행 TOP 10, <미녀와 야수> 2D 애니메이션 흥행 성적 보다 약 1천억 앞지른 매출액 약 5억 4만 달러(한화 약 5745억원). 이 기록은 모두 2D 애니메이션 <알라딘>이 개봉 당시 세운 초유의 기록들이다.

당시 <알라딘>은 제18회 LA 비평가 협회상 애니메이션상 수상, 제 50회 골든 글로브 시상식 뮤지컬 코미디 작품상 부분에 노미네이트 되어 작품성도 인정 받았다. 이처럼 전세계인들이 사랑한 히트작 <알라딘>이 디즈니 라이브 액션으로 부활해 지금껏 볼 수 없었던 엔터테인먼트 영화의 최정점을 선사한다.

실감나는 로케이션으로 블록버스터 오락 영화의 제대로 살린 <알라딘>은 영국 롱크로스 스튜디오와 아보필드 스튜디오, 요르단에서 촬영 됐다. <왕좌의 게임>의 프로덕션 디자이너 젬마 잭슨이 참여한 아그라바 왕국 세트는 다양한 문화가 있는 동양의 관문이자 아라비아와 아랍 문화에 큰 영향을 받은 국제적인 규모와 분위기의 도시. 젬마 잭슨 프로덕션 디자이너는 생동감 넘치는 컬러, 문화, 소리를 아그라바에 불어넣는 작업에 착수했다. 축구장 두 개 면적의 야외 세트장 제작은 약 15주가 걸렸으며 기존 <알라딘> 뮤지컬 넘버의 무대 공간의 분위기도 반영했다. 건물 배치, 거리의 곡선, 집들의 방향 등은 모두 배우들의 뮤지컬 넘버 장면들과 액션 장면들의 동선을 반영한 디자인이다.

강렬하고 화려한 색들로 구성된 의상들이 인상적이다. 마이클 윌킨슨 디자이너는 사전 제작 단계에서 주요 캐릭터들의 의상 테마를 두고 고심했다. 캐릭터들의 민족성, 지리 조건에 적합한 의상을 찾기 위한 작업은 오래 이어졌고 아프리카, 중동, 터키, 파키스탄에서 직접 원단을 공수해왔다. 영화 속 자스민(나오미 스콧)의 의상은 총 9벌이다. 그녀의 강인한 성격과 삶에 대한 열정, 왕족인 신분을 표현하기 위해 레드, 오렌지, 골드, 에메랄드 컬러들이 주로 쓰였다.

영화 속 ‘프린스 알리’ 뮤지컬 넘버 장면에는 200벌이 넘는 의상이 제작 됐다. 수 많은 인원의 퍼포먼서들이 저마다 고유한 의상과 헤어, 메이크업으로 보는 눈을 즐겁게 한다. 끝으로 왕자로 변신한 알라딘의 의상 작업도 보는 재미를 선사한다. 거리의 소년에서 왕자에 이르기까지 극단적인 신분 변화를 선보이는 알라딘의 의상은 캐릭터의 개성을 살려 제작 됐다.

영화 <알라딘> 블루레이는 극장용 오리지널 화면비인 2.39:1 와이드한 화면비와 FULL-HD 영상으로 안방 극장을 옛날 옛적 모험의 세계로 안내한다.

특히, 스타일리쉬한 연출력으로 정평이 나있는 가이 리치 감독은 화려한 비주얼과 쉴 틈 없이 몰아치는 빼곡한 스토리텔링으로 놓칠 수 없는 재미를 선사한다. 영화 <셜록 홈즈> 시리즈를 통해 진가를 발휘했던 가이 리치 감독은 자신만의 장기를 이번 <알라딘>에서도 유감없이 발휘한다.

가이 리치 감독이 영화 제작에 있어 디지털 팀에 요청한 것은 ‘사실감’이었다. 그에게는 <알라딘>이 판타지 어드벤처이지만 그 어떤 영화보다도 실감나는 아날로그적인 액션, 실감나는 세상이 구현되었으면 좋겠다는 바람이 있었다. 이에 ‘알라딘’ 역을 맡은 메나 마수드는 액션 연기를 위한 훈련 과정을 거쳤다. 거리에서 자란 소년답게 완벽하진 않지만 거친 알라딘의 몸동작은 가이 리치가 의도했던 바를 100% 이상 완벽하게 재현해냈다.

캐릭터 애니메이션, 퍼포먼스 캡쳐, 세트 확장, 디지털 환경, FX 시뮬레이션 등 모든 CGI 과정에서도 가이 리치 감독이 참여해 리얼리티를 체크해 영화의 완성도를 높였다.

특히, 블루레이를 통해서만 확인이 가능한 보너스 영상에는 ‘알라딘의 비디오 저널: 새롭고 환상적인 관점’ 제작기, 삭제곡 - "DESERT MOON", 가이 리치: 시네마틱 지니, 그 누구도 예상하지 못한 윌 스미스의 지니 역할이 빛난 지니 같은 친구 그리고 영화 ‘삭제 장면’들과 NG 장면들이 수록되어 있다.
